Five
Healthy Habits For Diabetics
This article is here to help you manage your condition efficiently. You
can prevent a lot of complications by adopting these simple habits.
Adopt a healthy diet, which means you should always check the labels of
the food you buy. A lot of aliments have unhealthy amounts of fat or
sugar, even though you would not suspect these foods to be so rich. For
instance, the cheaper brands of ground beef contain a huge amount of
fat and even the best orange juice has a high level of added sugar.
When you go shopping, always check the labels to find out how much
sugar, oil or fat an item contains. You should also look for products
with no sugar added, and replace red meat with fish or poultry. Beware
of sugar substitutes such as high fructose corn syrup which is very
unhealthy too.
Go to your doctor on a regular basis. Mention any issues you have
encountered and ask questions about your condition. Going to your
doctor once a month is the best way to make sure you are eating
properly, getting enough exercise and that your condition is under
control. Your family doctor is not the only person who can help you:
you can also go to a nutritionist to get help with your diet, a
personal trainer to design a better exercise routine or a footcare
specialist if you need special shoes.
Test your glucose level regularly throughout the day. There are
different products available, including test strips and monitors. Try
different solutions, and choose something that you can easily
carry with you everywhere you go. If you use a disposable product, make
sure you always have enough supplies put aside. Get in touch with your
health insurance provider to find out more about different products and
select the most affordable solution.
Drinking alcohol is not a good idea. Drinking alcohol will cause your
blood pressure to raise and increase your chances of developing
different condition, including eye or heart diseases. Drinking alcohol
will make your glucose level drop considerably. Having an occasional
drink is acceptable, as long as you keep monitoring your blood level
and eat a snack to balance your glucose level. If you are taking any
medications for your condition, you should avoid drinking since alcohol
and medications is a dangerous mix.
Low glucose levels can cause a number of gum diseases. You need to
clean your teeth thoroughly several times a day and go to your dentist
regularly. If your gums are painful, bleed or seem to decay, go to your
dentist right away and adopt a better dental hygiene. A dry mouth and a
permanent bad breath can also be caused by diabetes and increase the
risk of a gum disease developing. Go to your dentist once a month to
get your mouth cleaned and checked.
Make a few changes to your lifestyle and take the habit of checking
your glucose level. Managing your condition will get easier as you
become more used to it.
